As an educator, I base my philosophy largely on progressivism. I feel that children learn by doing and learn best through social interaction. I believe in hands on, constructivist learning. If we set high expectations for our learners we will have great outcomes. I emphasize problem solving and critical thinking through cooperative learning. This will teach the learner how to learn and not just what to learn resulting in an education that will be a continuous process long after they have left my class. Content is very important but it will not be my only focus. I believe in teaching the whole child and an important part of that is the child as a social being. A Strong theme for my classroom will be the meaning of respect and community. This will create life-long learning and social skills. The reason I am becoming an educator is that I feel I have an innate ability to see things from another person’s perspective and understand why they act in the ways they do. This ability has always made me a very understanding and patient person, which is imperative to helping children rise to their full potential. As an educator, I want to provide our young learners with the opportunities they need to feel important and capable. By allowing children to be an active part of the community, my hope is that they will begin to see how big of a difference they can really make as their own person.
